Postmaster General
Patrick R. Donahoe

"We have post offices out there that we have two customers, or three customers come in in an entire day," Donahoe said. "Remember the Maytag repairman? He used to have the loneliest job in the world. We probably have about 5,000 postmasters that have the loneliest job in the world."
(If this is true, then we should not be even in the first 5,000 to go, much less in the first 2,000. - editor)

Federal law prohibits USPS from closing traditional post offices -- where most mail processing occurs -- for economic reasons, so Donahoe is targeting about 2,000 postal stations and branches -- smaller, mostly leased sites.

"It is not our intention to take access away from the American public," Donahoe said Friday (January 21, 2011 - editor).

"The Postal Service has set a goal of closing 2,000 stations and branches in 2011", said Postal Service spokeswoman Joanne Veto. That's in addition to the 491 closures that are already underway, she said.

The Postal Service is not planning to close any post offices, she said, noting that the law prevents the closure of post offices for solely economic reasons. She described stations and branches as being smaller than post offices, with no mail processing, and sometimes no mail carriers.
